Parliamentary Panel Calls for Ayush Curriculum Overhaul

The Department-related Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health and Family Welfare has recommended a comprehensive revision of curricula across all streams under the Ministry of Ayush to modernise education and better prepare practitioners with relevant skills and competencies.

In its 168th report reviewing the government’s response to earlier recommendations in the Demand for Grants 2025-26, the committee highlighted significant gaps in the current Ayush education framework. The panel, chaired by Prof. Ram Gopal Yadav, emphasised the need for technology integration, updated academic content, and measurable implementation timelines to align traditional medical systems with contemporary healthcare demands.

The committee expressed concern that the Ministry’s action taken report lacked clarity on several key aspects, including the enhancement of the Ayush-MBBS curriculum and the expansion of a one-year nursing programme within Ayush systems. It further noted insufficient articulation on how soft skills—such as communication, ethics, professional discipline, and interdisciplinary research methodology—are being incorporated into syllabi across various disciplines.

The panel also observed that responses from autonomous bodies, institutes, and research councils under Ayush were incomplete, urging the Ministry to furnish comprehensive details on steps taken so far. It underscored the need for a detailed implementation strategy with clear timelines and measurable outcomes for curriculum reform.

Highlighting the growth challenges faced by the Ayush education system, the committee reaffirmed its call to strengthen the academic structure to ensure that practitioners are equipped not only with traditional therapeutic knowledge but also with modern technological competencies needed in integrated healthcare delivery.
