More Health Insurance Users Shift to AYUSH Care
Health insurance policyholders across India are increasingly opting for AYUSH coverage, leading to a marked rise in demand for insurance support for traditional treatment streams. This shift follows the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India’s (IRDAI) directive that equates AYUSH systems with allopathic care for insurance coverage. The change has strengthened public confidence in choosing traditional and integrative treatment options.
Insurance companies are reporting a consistent increase in AYUSH-related claims. Bajaj General Insurance recorded over a 45% rise in AYUSH claims during the first half of FY 2025–26 compared to the previous year. Star Health and Allied Insurance also confirmed that more than 6,500 policyholders opted for AYUSH treatments between April 2024 and October 2025, reflecting strong customer interest in affordable and holistic healthcare options.
Experts attribute the upward trend to the cost-effectiveness and long-term benefits of AYUSH treatments, particularly for chronic conditions like hypertension, diabetes, and musculoskeletal disorders. With the IRDAI mandate ensuring equal insurance support for AYUSH therapies, the sector is expected to witness continued growth in acceptance and utilisation in the coming years.
